Veneers are restorations that cover the front surface of a tooth. While they can improve function, most of the time veneers are used to improve the appearance of a smile — whether a tooth is misshapen, chipped, discolored, or rotated. Made of porcelain or ceramic, they are a conservative way to improve teeth while preserving natural tooth structure.

When tooth structure is compromised, a dental crown rebuilds the tooth to its optimal shape and function. The compromised structure is removed and the tooth is prepared to make room for the crown, which is usually ceramic but can also be gold or composite.

Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp inside the root canal becomes inflamed or infected — from deep decay, repeated procedures, or a crack or injury. The dentist removes the infected pulp and nerve, cleans and shapes the canal, then fills and seals the space. A crown is usually placed afterward to protect and restore the tooth.

Dental implant surgery replaces tooth roots with metal, screw-like posts and replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function much like real ones. It can be a welcome alternative to dentures or bridgework. Because the bone must heal tightly around the implant, the process can take several months.

A sleep appliance is worn in the mouth overnight to position the lower jaw slightly forward, bringing the tongue forward and keeping the airway open for unobstructed breathing. Symptoms of sleep apnea include excessive daytime sleepiness, depression, high blood pressure, and nighttime teeth grinding.
